A Teaching and Learning Design for a Listening and Speaking Lesson

Greetings: Hello, good morning! Nice to meet you! I’m No. 6. It’s my great honor to have the chance to give a talk here. My topic is Don’t eat in class. It’s the 4th unit of Junior English Book , Grade 7, B. I’m talking about my design for the 1st period of this unit, 1a-2c. It consists of 3 parts: analysis of the teaching materials and the students, teaching and learning methods and teaching and learning procedure.

Analysis of the teaching materials and the students

The function of Unit 4 is talking about rules. And It’s the 1st period of this unit. It’s a listening and speaking lesson. As we know, listening and speaking lesson is a very important content in each unit. I mean, they’re basic skills for students to learn English, and learning it well can help them to learn the rest better.

The students are now in Grade 7. They’ve got a basic training of listening and talking ability in primary school and the last term. And the topic is very close to their daily life. It’s not difficult for them to understand rules. The key points of this period should be some words, useful phrases, expressions and sentence structures when talking about rules. I think it’s difficult for them to talk about rules properly.

So according to the materials, the students and the Curriculum Standard, I set the teaching and learning aims like this:

First: Knowledge aims. By learning this period, students can:

1. master 9 key words and 2 phrases.

2. understand and use the modal verbs can, can’t and must , and Don’t do structure to talk about rules. 

Second: Skill aims: It’s very important to develop the students’ listening ability and try to train the students co-operative ability.

Third: Moral aims: This lesson is a very good teaching material for our quality education. I mean, by learning this lesson, students can know about what they can and can’t do at school clearer and it’s important for them to develop their rule consciousness.

Teaching and learning methods

I will try to create various activities for the students to communicate. They listen, read, discuss, act out and do a competition. So they must learn how to co-operate with others, and how to communicate with others in English. Just like making a film, in it I’m the director, and the students are actors and actresses. These are my teaching and learning methods.

In this class, the multimedia, a recorder and a test paper will be needed.

Next, I’ll talk about the teaching and learning procedure.

 This period consists of two tasks of listening practice. So I divide the whole content into two parts, from 1a to 1c is the 1st part and the 2nd part is from 2a to 2c. To achieve the two tasks, I will arrange different activities from three parts- before, while and after listening.

Step 1: Lead-in

Before class, I ask a student to pretend to come to class late.

At the beginning of the class. I’ll teach some new words and expressions: rule, break the rule, arrive late for, on time, dining hall with the help of the student who is late and some ppt pictures. Then tell the students:

There are many school rules in our school. From this period we are talking about these rules and learn to make rules for others and ourselves.

The purpose of this step is to arouse students’ interests in this topic. Meanwhile, we can learn some new words which are not easy to understand.

Step 2: Jobs before listening

Well, now let’s come to Peter’s class. With the help of the picture, get the students to finish off 1a by self study. Then ask them to read the school rules together.

Purpose : To get some information of rules by reading the picture and self study and get ready for listening.

Step 3: Jobs while listening

Listen and write the numbers after the names.

Purpose: To train the students listening skill.

Step 4: Jobs after listening

Pair work: Do as 1c requires. Then get three pairs to act it out in class.

This is a controlled task. The purpose is to drill the target language and train their co-operation ability.

Step 5: Jobs before listening

Get the students read the activities in the form of 2a, and try to choose can or can’t before listening.

Purpose: To get information by reading and train the students’ judging which are correct and which are incorrect activities.

Step 6: Jobs while listening

1. Listen and check the activities Alan and Cindy talk about. Then check the answers.

2. Listen and circle can or can’t. Then check the answers. ppt

Purpose: To train the students listening skill.

Step 7: Jobs after listening

1. Pair work: Read the tape scripts on page 91 in pairs to get familiar with some detailed information and get ready for the following pair work..

2. Pair work: Look at the form in 1a and make up their own conversations.

This is a half opening task. The purpose is to get the students to use what they learn to do work and meanwhile train their co-operation habit and ability.

Step 8: A competition

Get the students to list as many rules that they can or can’t do as they can in three minutes. Then they hand in their work to their group leader, and then devote for the champion. And get one of the group champion to say out what he or she writes down. Others can add some more.

 

Purpose: To arouse the students’ interests and meanwhile use the language they have learned by the competition.

Step 9: Summary and check

1. Get the students to read the words and expressions on the blackboard.

2. A classroom test to check if they can master what they’ve learned in this period. ppt

3. A saying: Nothing can be accomplished without norms or standards. (It’s a little difficult for them to recognize, but they can write it down and know how to express this meaning in English.) ppt

Purpose: To sum up the knowledge and check if they can achieve the learning aims..

Step 10: Homework ppt

A: To make word cards.

B: To listen to the tape and repeat twice.

C: To write down as many school rules as they can in their exercise books.

Purpose: To let students further understand the new words, expressions and the target language.

 

Generally speaking, step by step, from life to lesson and from the lesson to our daily life again, students can accept the contents easily, understand the rules and develop their rule consciousness. Because time is limited, there must be something not proper. Please tell me!
