A Teaching and Learning Design for a Reading Lesson

Greetings: Hello, good morning! Nice to meet you! I’m No. 6. It’s my great honor to have the chance to give a talk here. Next, I’m going to talk about 2a-2c of Unit 4, Junior English Book, Go For It , Grade 7, B. My design consists of 3 parts: analysis of the teaching materials and the students, teaching and learning methods and teaching and learning procedure.

Analysis of the teaching materials and the students

The function of Unit 4 is talking about rules. And It’s the 2nd period of Section B. It’s a reading lesson. As we know, reading lesson is a very important content in each unit. I mean, not only in knowledge and skills, but also in its moral significance.

The students have got a basic training of reading ability by now. And they also have learned what the rules are and how to talk about rules from the last several periods.

So, the key points of this period should be 12 words, 3 phrases and consolidating the structures and the target language used to talk about rules. As for reading skills, it’s important for them to find out useful information by skimming. I think it’s also the difficult point.

So according to the materials, the students and the Curriculum Standard, I set the teaching and learning aims like this:

First: Knowledge aims. By learning this period, students can:

1. master 12 key words and 3 phrases.

2. Comprehend the meaning of the article.

Second: Skill aims: It’s very important to develop the students’ reading ability- find out useful information by skimming.

Third: Moral aims: This lesson is a very good teaching material for our quality education. I mean, by learning this lesson, students can know that parents and schools make rules to help them and it’s important for them to develop their rule consciousness.

Teaching and learning methods

I will try to create various activities for the students to communicate. They listen, read, write and  discuss. So they must learn how to co-operate with others, and how to communicate with others in English. Just like making a film, in it I’m the director, and the students are actors and actresses. These are my teaching and learning methods.

In this class, the multimedia, a recorder and a test paper will be needed.

Next, I’ll talk about the teaching and learning procedure.

This is a reading lesson. I will arrange different activities from three parts- before, while and after reading.

Before reading

Step 1: Warming up

Show Rules, Rules and Rules (page 105) on the screen, I chant the poem with the students, clapping our hands.  Purpose: To review the old knowledge and arouse their interests.

Step 2: Lead-in

Pair work: Discuss the following questions: What will you do when you are unhappy? / Will you talk to your parents, talk to your good friends or write your feelings down in your diary?

Then I will instruct them with the following words: Everyone may feel unhappy sometimes, but we need to know how to deal with it. One girl called Molly feels unhappy. Let’s see what she does to make herself feel better.

The purpose of this step is to lead them into the environment. It can make students very excited, very active, very eager to find out the answer.

While reading

Step 3: Skimming

Question: Why does Molly write to Dr. Know?

Purpose : To train the students’ reading skill- to catch the main idea of the article by reading quickly.

Step 4: Scanning

Get the students to underline the rules for Molly. And then write them down in their exercise books. And then check their work with deskmater.

Purpose: To train the students reading skill- to get more information by scanning.

Step 5: Scanning

Question: 1. What’s Dr. Know’s main idea in the letter? / 2. What advice does Dr. Know give Molly?

Step 6: Detailed reading

Intensive reading for detailed information. I’ll show the key words and useful expressions and structures on the screen. I’ll give some explanation and some exercises on them if necessary.

Purpose: To learn some new language items and train the students’guessing skills in reading.

After reading

Step 7: Listening and reading

Purpose: To correct their pronunciation and intonation. And further understand the two letters.

Step 8: 2c

Complete the sentences with have to / must, can or can’t. And then exchange their work to chek.

Purpose: To focus on the usages of modal verbs.

Step 9: English gas-station

Make an interview named “Focus to talk about”.

In the program, there are 2 students acting as the guests, one girl student acts as Jing Yidan.

Topic: Rules on weekends and feelings

Other students can ask questions if they have any.

Purpose: This step is very effective to deal with the moral aim of the lesson. It can make the class lively and interesting, what’s more important, it can encourage students to use what they have learned directly and effectively.

Step 10: Homework

A: Write a short passage about your feelings about your family rules.

B: Collect more sayings about rules in English from the internet.

Generally speaking, step by step, from life to text and from the text to our daily life again, students can accept the contents easily, comprehend the text entirely and develop their rule consciousness. Because of the lack of experience, there must be something not proper. Please tell me!
